Beers and wines were stored in oak barrels for centuries before modern packaging. This would impart very important flavor elements and qualities to the finished product. Home brewers and wine makers can capture these characteristics with the use of oak shavings. Hungarian Oak is especially desired due to it’s subtle and sophisticated flavor characteristics like that of French oak yet at a better value. Oak shavings have a greater surface area than oak chips or cubes which allows for a fuller, faster extraction of flavor. The medium toast oak shavings provide a richer, nuttier flavor than light toast but without the intensity of dark toast.

Ingredients: Hungarian Oak Form: Shavings Toast Level: Medium - Use 0.5-0.8g per 1 US gallon (0.13g – 0.21g per 1L). If adding pre-fermentation, add directly to the beer or wine. If adding post-fermentation, sanitize oak by steaming or mixing with a small amount of boiling water. Place the oak chips in a steeping bag and submerge in the liquid after fermentation has ceased. Flavor will develop up to 2 weeks. Remove the oak when the intended level of flavor is achieved.
